The Heritage Center at Red Cloud Indian School to host annual art show, featuring work by Lakota artists
Held May 31- August 09, 2009

The Heritage Center will host its annual art show at Red Cloud Indian School for the 42nd year, with an opening slated for May 31, 2009. The exhibit, which features Native American and Lakota art from across the United States and Canada, will run through August 9.

Each year, more than 10,000 visitors take in the juried exhibit, which gives local and national Native American artists an opportunity to show off their work, oftentimes for the first time. For visitors to the museum, it’s a chance to view and purchase work while learning about the Lakota people and Red Cloud Indian School.

“This art show makes Red Cloud graduates, and friends of the mission, very proud indeed,” says Charles Trimble, a 1952 graduate of the school. “Not all schools are privileged to have a world-class show and collection of Native American art like Red Cloud has, especially in the Northern Plains region. Each year, this show is representative of the outstanding work that was laid by the late Brother C.M. Simon SJ, and now presently, by Peter Strong.”

More than 150 pieces will be on display, with over 50 Native American artists represented in the exhibit. This year, more than $7,000 in prizes will be awarded to winners in 22 different categories.

“We hope to create a supportive environment where emerging and established artists can not only be recognized for their work, but also gain national exposure as they move forward with their careers as artists,” says Peter Strong, director of The Heritage Center.

Applications for entry into the 42nd Annual Red Cloud Indian Art Show are still being accepted, through May 22. Entry is open to all Native American artists over the age of 18 and enrolled in a federally recognized tribe.

The show is free and open to the public seven days a week, with free daily tours of the campus available as well.
