Lakota artwork, beadwork and quillwork now available for purchase online
posted on February 5, 2010

Lakota-made artwork, beadwork and quillwork created everyday on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation are now available for purchase online, thanks to an initiative by The Heritage Center at Red Cloud Indian School to expand the availability of Lakota work to a larger audience. The one-of-a-kind, authentic work can be purchased online at:
http://www.redcloudschool.org/museum/shop/forsale.html.

“With our mission to collect, preserve and exhibit the wonderful fine and tribal arts of Native Americans—and specifically the Lakota people—we felt this was a necessary step to take to share with the world the appreciation that we have on the Pine Ridge Reservation for our culture and heritage,” says Myrtle Cedar Face, gift shop manager at The Heritage Center. “It’s important to promote our culture by keeping it alive through the continued creation and sharing of this beautiful artwork.”

The online store currently features more than 100 handcrafted items by local artists, including earrings, bracelets, key chains and even star quilts. The items online, updated weekly, are just a sample of what is available in the The Heritage Center Gift Shop.

“This online store will allow us to continue the promotion of local artists by hopefully creating a larger, more expansive audience for these pieces,” says Cedar Face, who also works with the artists to purchase the items made available in the gift shop.

The Heritage Center plays an important role in the local economy, she says, by reselling more than $100,000 worth in art annually. “The more we sell, the more we are able to put back into our economy. It’s a great, unique opportunity for artists on the reservation.”

Orders can be made 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with shipments typically going out the following business day. For more information, call 605/867-8257 or email heritagecenter@redcloudschool.org.

Join us in our mission of educating the mind and spirit of the Lakota people, now and for future generations. Please consider an online gift.
