Red Cloud students take home six awards at Shannon County Reservation-wide Banquet Students from Red Cloud Indian School on the Pine Ridge Reservation took home six of the eight awards at the 29th Annual Shannon County Reservation-wide Student Recognition Awards Banquet held Monday night at Wolf Creek School. The award recognition was part of an evening honoring high school seniors and eighth grade students for exceptional academic achievement during the 2007-2008 school year. Students from four area high schools and eight elementary schools—both public and parochial—attended the event, with awards given for academic excellence, citizenship, extra curricular involvement, and athletics. More than 300 students, parents and educators were in attendance. “It was a privilege to witness our students being recognized and honored for their achievements,” says Bob Brave Heart, superintendent of schools for Red Cloud. “Their awards are a tribute to our educational endeavors across the reservation.” Students receiving awards from Red Cloud Indian School are: Jamie Hudspeth, Eighth Grade Bill Cuny Citizenship Award; Tiara Little, Eighth Grade Extra Curricular Award; Jessica Clifford, Eighth Grade Academic Award; Chant Knight, Twelfth Grade Extra Curricular Award; Christian McGee, Scholastic Athlete of the Year; and Veronica Watters, Twelfth Grade Academic Award. This year’s graduating classes at Red Cloud have shattered the stereotypes of education on the Pine Ridge Reservation, with a record-number of students receiving the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship and college acceptance to post-secondary institutions like Duke, Dartmouth, Yale and Princeton. Upon graduation, 100 percent of this year’s senior class are planning on going to college or entering military service.
