Red Cloud Elementary School and Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School teachers know how important reading to a child can be: · Children who are read to at home have a higher success rate in school. · Children who read frequently develop stronger reading skills. Beginning on March 3, Red Cloud Elementary kicked off Read Across America, part of a nationwide effort to encourage parents, caregivers and children to keep reading on their calendars 365 days a year. "Knowing that there is no public library access for our students, the school is working hard to making reading material and experiences available," says Red Cloud Elementary Principal Jennifer Sierra. The school hosts book fairs each year, and gives books to students to take and share with their younger siblings at home. The school's monthly literacy day is paying off in huge dividends, as Red Cloud Indian School students are "not only reading at their grade level or above, but are also being challenged to be proficient in all areas of their education," adds Sierra. As part of Read Across America Week, students will spend their days going to different classrooms doing fun reading activities. Students will also see new faces in the classroom, as Red Cloud administrators, local community members, and parents will put on Dr. Suess' signature red and white-striped stovepipe hat to read selections from their favorite books to students. And, students will even indulge their sweet tooth with a birthday celebration for Dr. Suess, celebrating his 104th birthday this year.
