Three Red Cloud students crowned at Oglala Nation Powwow Pageant, first time all three winners from one school Three Red Cloud Indian School students have been chosen to represent the Oglala Sioux tribe and culture, each crowned winners at the 2008 Oglala National Powwow Pageant on August 2. Daisa One Feather, Stephanie Garnier and Sidney Richards will represent the tribe for the next year, showing their talents and sharing their knowledge of Lakota culture at events across the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and the greater world. The selection of the contestants marks the first time all three crowns were awarded to contestants attending Red Cloud. Ten elementary schools and three high schools are represented at the pageant each year. “We are very proud of our students,” says Fr. Peter Klink SJ, president. “Daisa, Stephanie and Sidney are all wonderful representatives for both Red Cloud and the reservation, apt and poised to educate and enhance the lives of all they will come in contact with over the next year.” One Feather, a junior at Red Cloud, was crowed Miss Oglala Lakota Nation. One Feather is recognized across campus for her active role in the Mahpiya Luta Dance Club as a traditional dancer. Garnier, a sophomore, was named Junior Miss Oglala Lakota Nation, and Sidney Richards, a fourth grader, was selected Little Miss Oglala Lakota Nation. Lisa Bear Robe, also a Red Cloud graduate and the previous Miss Oglala Lakota Nation, took part in the pageant. “Over the past year, this Lakota program has given me a better understanding of my culture, supplemented by the history I learned while at Red Cloud,” says Bear Robe. “I am so appreciative of all at Red Cloud, and across the reservation, who empowered me to have this experience over the course of the past year.”
