Red Cloud Indian School has selected MAC Construction Company of Rapid City, South Dakota, to build the $2.5 million addition and renovation to its high school. This is the first building project committed to an academic space in more than 20 years. “For more than 30 years, MAC has worked in the Black Hills region to provide quality construction services, successfully completing school projects in rural areas, with extensive experience in the remodeling and renovating of existing spaces under difficult conditions,” says Peter Anderson, president of MAC Construction. “We are both honored and excited to begin work on a building that will continue to showcase the outstanding work happening on the Pine Ridge Reservation each day.” The new high school wing will feature an eco-friendly, state-of-the-art facility for the science and Lakota studies programs, as well as socializing and office space for students and faculty. The school will be looking into ways to make the addition energy efficient, including ways to enhance effective and efficient heating and cooling. The new addition is slated to be ready for the fall 2009 school year. A groundbreaking date for the building will be announced soon. “MAC has a superior record of delivering quality construction and renovation within a safe environment, both of which were key reasons why we selected them for the construction of this addition,” says Albert Tibbitts, vice president of administration at Red Cloud and a member of the committee overseeing the building project. MAC’s experience with renovations while buildings are occupied was additionally important to the selection committee. Furthermore, “Peter and the other employees at MAC share in our collective mission for this project, to continue the unparalleled education of Lakota for decades to come,” Tibbitts continues. Over the course of the next few weeks, MAC will work closely with the school and Tammy Eagle Bull, a Lakota woman and president of Encompass Architects, to complete the design phase of the high school addition. Fundraising continues for the addition, which recently received an anonymous $1 million gift toward the $2.5 million goal.
