The Heritage Center receives preservation grant for unique artwork The Red Cloud Indian School Heritage Center has received a generous grant for the continued preservation of Native American artwork. The $6,000 gift from the Mary Chilton DAR Foundation will enable The Heritage Center to preserve a unique collection of Pacific Northwest Coast and Inuit stone-cut prints that have been donated to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation-based gallery over the last 30 years. “This gift is tremendously important for Native Americans, and will go a long way in encouraging future generations of artists to learn from and celebrate the work of these unique artists,” says Peter Strong, director of The Heritage Center. The preservation and restoration of the artwork is part of a 45-piece Native American Preservation Project that The Heritage Center is undertaking, storing the works unframed for future display and storage. “The preservation of these items will mean that their accessibility and usefulness will be long-lasting, regardless of whether they are part of a permanent display or stored for future exhibits,” says Strong. The Heritage Center currently provides a cultural and educational experience to over 600 students at Red Cloud. More than 10,000 people visit the gallery annually. The Mary Chilton DAR Foundation is a South Dakota organization that provides grants for action and research projects relating to the DAR Chapters in South Dakota. The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) was founded by women in 1890 for historical, educational and patriotic purposes.
