posted on April 18, 2008

Red Cloud High School art students have been invited to participate in the art exhibit sponsored through the Dakota Artists Guild. The Dakota Artists Guild exhibit at First United Methodist Church, 629 Kansas City St, Rapid City, SD.-Art by Leah Peterson’s students at Red Cloud High School are featured and in the exhibit Red Cloud students have about 15 pieces including drawings, paintings, scratchboard, and paper bag shoes.

The division of drawing-for the skull the students spent a week studying a cow skull under a spot light, each student drew different angles of the skull. The students used all shades from a ten shade grade in their drawings. The pencils drawings included Freshmen Tynan Clark and Truman Rossman, sophomore Kiley Brings Plenty and junior Mike Clifford. “Each student drew the same object but their personalities were reflected in their drawings.” Leah Peterson-Art Teacher.

The paper bag shoe project was presented to the students as a problem solving project. Each was given a little direction on how to make their shoe. They were to find a pair of shoes they wanted to replicate and build them out of the few materials presented to them. The replica had to be in three-dimensional form from a two-dimensional picture. Student who excelled in this project were seniors: Danielle Hudspeth and Ashley Pourier.

The next division of study is paintings which were inspired by the urban movement that is prevalent in art today. The students were given a task of creating a painting that made a statement, because the project was open ended the paintings showed striking differences. The student who titled their pieces based upon the paintings statement. The student were strong in this dimension are sophomores Kelsey Richards and Kiley Brings Plenty, juniors included Jamie Ten Fingers, Josh Huston, Mike Clifford and Elicia Truckenbroad, Seniors Damian Arredondo, Misty Palmier, Roman White Calf, Jasmine White Butterfly, Samie Romero, Dylan Fills Pipe, Taylor Spoon Hunter and Maya Iron Cloud.

The scratchboard drawings are representative of the religious and spiritual knowledge passed down to the students at Red Cloud High. Beginning as freshman the students learn both Catholic and Lakota traditions. The two are presented in classes such as Spiritual Rights, Spiritual Formation, and Lakota studies. Along with classes students are exposed and encouraged to participate in Catholic Mass and Lakota Sweat Lodges. These scratchboards represent visually some of the traditions, stories, and beliefs founded in the Catholic religion and the Lakota way of life.

Red Cloud art students continue to hone their skills and talents under the direction of their very dedicated art teacher Leah Peterson.

Join us in our mission of educating the mind and spirit of the Lakota people, now and for future generations. Please consider an online gift.
